- Get-Coat Fiberglass Reinforced Polyester
Known simply as fiberglass, this lightweight material is available in a variety of sizes and shapes to fit any bathroom. One drawback of a fiberglass tub is its extremely porous surface which makes getting mold and mildew tough to get out. Color is sprayed onto the lower-quality polyester surface making it more susceptible to stains and dulling over time. This can make your new bathroom look very old in a relatively short period of time.
- Porcelain Enameled Steel
This option requires a tiled surface called a "wet wall" that costs more than the tub itself to be applied. Even though this material is sturdy, the enamel coating has a tendency to chip. Due to the fact that it is made of steel, it is very cold to the touch and cools bath water faster.
- Cast Iron
Having been the material from which claw foot tubs were made, it’s the most durable bath material on the market. It is only available in a very limited amount of shapes and sizes. Being it is so heavy; any tub made of cast iron may require additional structural support in the floor beneath it. As an enameled surfaces, cast iron is also cold to the touch, cools bath water faster and the coating has a tendency to chip.
- Cast Acrylic
It's warm to the touch making for a more relaxing experience. The water stays warmer much longer than the other four choices. This highly durable, non-porous solid surface will better resist scum and mildew. The surface is highly durable and is scratch and stain resistant. The surface is much easier to clean than the other materials. When cleaned according to the manufacturer's directions, the surface will retain a showroom finish for many years.
Cast acrylic bathtubs are available in a wide variety of shapes and colors. LUCITE cast acrylic sheet is unique because the color goes all the way through the material. The color is not just sprayed onto the surface as with the other three choices. Cast acrylic color will not fade over time and it can absorb impacts that would chip the other materials. Cast acrylic is slightly more expensive than fiberglass, but over the long term, it’s your best investment.
